KATHMANDU; The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) purchased electricity worth Rs 67.68 billion from private-sector power producers in the last fiscal year 2025/26, accounting for around 58 percent of its total electricity purchase expenses.

According to the NEA’s annual report, the authority spent a total of Rs 117.387 billion on electricity purchases from private-sector producers, its subsidiary companies and India during the review year. Of the total, Rs 67.68 billion was paid to private-sector producers, Rs 17.86 billion to NEA subsidiaries and Rs 10.56 billion for electricity imported from India.

The NEA purchases electricity from various domestic hydropower projects and supplies it to consumers across the country while also exporting surplus power to India. When domestic generation falls short of demand, the authority imports electricity from India to maintain supply.

During FY 2025/26, NEA generated 2,803 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity from its own power plants. It purchased 3,826 GWh from its subsidiary companies, 10,825 GWh from private-sector producers and imported 1,171 GWh from India. Electricity purchased from the private sector accounted for the largest share of the NEA’s total power procurement.

Meanwhile, the NEA earned Rs 148.62 billion from electricity sales during the review year, up significantly from the previous fiscal year. Of the total revenue, Rs 119.31 billion came from domestic electricity sales, while Rs 29.31 billion was generated through electricity exports to India.
