Kathmandu: The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has drawn preliminary conclusions that the flood in Nepal occurred when a river blocked by an avalanche in Tibet opened suddenly.
The authority held a meeting to examine the possible causes of the massive flood in Rasuwa, which continues to cause widespread damage. The meeting also discussed the initial cause of the flood.
The authority said it received information about the river opening only at 9 am on Wednesday. The Authority’s Spokesperson Shanti Mahat said that the flood suddenly occurred after the blocked river was opened.
" The river was blocked by an avalanche. The flood is expected to occur suddenly because of the opening of that river in Tibet," she said.
Mahat said that it was not possible to give advance information about the flood in Nepal due to lack of early information. The flood entered Nepal from the Lende River on the Tibetan side via the Bhotekoshi River at 8:40 am.
Floodwaters and landslides have caused extensive damage in Timure and surrounding areas, including electricity generation plants—425 MW hydropower and 25 MW solar power.
