Kathmandu: Austrian multinational ANDRITZ Hydro Pvt. Ltd. has been awarded a major contract to supply electro-mechanical equipment for the Saidongar-1 Karjat Pumped Storage Project. Located in Maharashtra, this 3,000 MW project is set to be the largest of its kind in India.

Promoted by Torrent Power (through its subsidiary Torrent Energy Storage Solutions), the project will see ANDRITZ take charge of the design, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning of ten reversible pump turbines, motor-generators, and other essential electro-mechanical components.

ANDRITZ stated it will execute the project utilizing its state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in India to maximize local content. The agreement, valued in the low three-digit million euro range, is expected to significantly transform India’s renewable energy sector.

According to Torrent Power, the project will generate 6,241 GWh of energy annually. It is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 4.55 million tons, an impact equivalent to taking nearly one million cars off the road each year. Furthermore, the project represents a milestone in India’s clean energy transition, enhancing energy security and providing crucial grid stability for intermittent sources like solar and wind.

ANDRITZ is currently involved in seven pumped storage projects across India, representing a combined capacity of over 11 GW. Through this collaboration, India continues to address its rising energy demand with affordable, reliable, and sustainable alternatives.
