KATHMANDU; The government, aiming to expedite the operation of hydrogen fuel backed vehicles in the domestic market, has sought suggestions from stakeholders on the issue.

Issuing a public notice on Wednesday, the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MoID) requested the stakeholders including universities, research institutions, commercial entities, industries, donor partners and international organizations, to submit written comments and suggestions on the prospects for operating hydrogen- powered vehicles in Nepal.

The MoID has invited suggestions on global best practices, policy and legal frameworks, hydrogen production, storage, transportation, distribution and refueling infrastructure, safety standards, feasibility of converting existing internal combustion engine vehicles to hydrogen technology, required technologies, costs, regulatory arrangements, technical manpower and institutional capacity development.

The ministry has shared the emails [email protected] or [email protected] to submit suggestions by July 4.

Green hydrogen is produced using electricity generated from renewable energy sources to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis. Green hydrogen holds significant promise for meeting global energy demand while contributing to climate action goals.

In collaboration with the Nepal Oil Corporation, Kathmandu University has established the hydrogen laboratory targeting to promote hydrogen-powered vehicles in the country.

The government has already formulated a policy regarding hydrogen utilization. However, there is a pressing need to enact hydrogen-specific laws and regulations to formally recognize hydrogen as a viable fuel source in Nepal.
