Kathmandu: Gham Power Nepal Pvt Ltd, a company that has been working in the development of solar power for a long time, has started manufacturing 'Soluble Lead-Flow Battery,' an emerging energy storage device.
This is the first time that the energy storage system has been developed in Nepal. According to the company, the device has been developed by a fusion of old and new technologies, with the help of researchers from the University of Southampton, UK.
Amid a program organized in the capital, University Professor Richard Wills shared information about how the battery works and how it is manufactured.
The basis of the 'Soluble Lead-Flow Battery' is the lead collected from used batteries which is further utilized as the main material for electricity storage. This gives new life to the battery and acts as an alternative to storing energy generated from solar and hydroelectric power.
As Nepal's renewable energy capacity accelerates, there is an increasing call for reliable energy storage system. At this time, it is expected that new technology can fill the gap in renewable energy integration and long-term stable energy storage.
Professor Wills also explained how the battery is charged and discharged, that is, how lead is deposited and removed from the electrodes. The development of this system is also believed to bring together international research expertise and local knowledge and adapt it to the context of Nepal.
Anjal Niraula, CEO of Gham Power, said it would be more effective for the country, given the government emphasizes on clean energy development, matching local sources and needs, and based on recycled materials.
Founded in 2010, Gham Power is a solar energy company that has installed 18 megawatts of solar capacity through more than 4,000 projects. It claims to have reduced more than 88,636 tons of carbon emissions.
The company claims to have displaced more than 33,073 kiloliters of diesel and has had a positive impact on 60,000 lives. In addition, by integrating solar technology with smart data systems, the company has been working to achieve goal of providing reliable clean energy as an alternative to fossil fuels, providing energy to industry, rural communities and the agricultural sector.
