NEA Projects 1,154 MW Power Imports for Dry Season

Kathmandu: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) plans to import up to 1,154 MW of electricity from India to ensure a smooth power supply during the upcoming dry season from January to May 2027.

The NEA estimates Nepal’s total installed generation capacity will reach 4,060 MW by mid-December, following the addition of 320.60 MW from projects currently under construction.

However, declining river flows are expected to reduce available domestic generation to around 1,218 MW, while average national peak demand is projected to remain at 2,292 MW in dry season.

To cover the estimated shortfall of 1,154.80 MW, the NEA plans to import 600.80 MW through the Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur transmission line, 54 MW via Tanakpur-Mahendranagar, 350 MW through transmission lines linked to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, and 150 MW under bilateral arrangements.

With domestic generation and imports combined, the NEA expects around 2,372.77 MW of electricity to be available during the dry season, helping meet projected national demand.

India has currently approved Nepal’s import of 600.80 MW through Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur during solar hours until the end of December. The NEA plans to seek an extension to maintain adequate power supplies through the dry season.
