KATHMANDU: Managing Director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Kulman Ghising said that the authority is working on large projects with 2,000 MW capacity.

At the inauguration ceremony of the 12th general convention of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) employees' union on Friday, Managing Director Ghising said that the NEA has put forward large projects of 2,000 MW. He said that except for the 2,000 MW project , NEA will get the license for the 450 MW Arun IV Hydropower Project to dispel the illusion that they have not started big projects.

“While Upper Arun and Arun IV are being developed with about 1500 MW in Arun Corridor alone, we are looking forward to the investment of the staff as well,” he said. He said that today's challenge is to increase the demand and the consumption of electricity as 400 to 500 MW of electricity is being wasted every day.

Ghising said that the demand for electricity from India has also decreased due to the rains. “Due to the rains, the demand and our exports have also decreased. We were also exporting some to Bihar, India, but now due to their low demand, we are wasting 400/500 MW every day,” he said.

Managing Director Ghising said that NEA is moving towards building a transmission line that can support the demand of 15,000 MW in the current phase. He said that the demand for electricity consumption will increase in various sectors including electrical vehicles and cooking. He complained that despite the work of strengthening the transmission line to increase the consumption of electricity, the work could not be done at a faster pace due to the court order and obstruction of the locals.
