Managing Director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), Kulman Ghising, has said that there is fluctuation of electricity in Kathmandu due to increase in electricity consumption across the country.

Speaking at a press conference organized at the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation on Friday, Managing Director Ghising said that the power was going out as the transformers had to be replaced and it would take some time to complete the work. He also said that the problem of the valley will be solved within a few days.

“Currently, the demand across the country has increased by 25 to 30 percent as compared to last year. We believe that all the equipment including inductions are used by people now due to which the demand has increased by 300MW to 400 MW. In Kathmandu Valley alone, there is a demand of around 450 MW,” Ghising said.

“I have come to know that there are problems in some places in Kathmandu. The peak hour is from 5:30 PM to 7 PM. Some of the transformers seem to be overloaded during these peak hours,” he said while explaining the reasons behind occasional power disruptions.

According to Managing Director Ghising, JICA’s fund of 150 million will be available soon and that the fund will be used for underground cabling in the main areas of Kathmandu and Pokhara.
