Nepal’s import of electricity from India has reached 468 MW, up from 367 MW a month ago, due to the surge in demand with a drop in temperature and reduction in domestic production.

According to Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), the peak hour demand has reached 1,710 MW, compared to the maximum demand of 1,474.79 MW during winter of last year. A month ago, the demand stood at 1,619 MW.

At present, the domestic production capacity stands at around 2,000 MW. However, only 757 MW is being produced due to a fall in flow of water in rivers. Of the production, NEA shares 291 MW while 143 MW is being produced by NEA subsidiaries and 323 MW is being supplied by private sector companies.

With an increased production, import this year has gone down, according to NEA records. Last year, Nepal imported 727 MW of electricity from India.
