Kathmandu; Nepal's renowned transformer manufacturer company, Nepal Ekarat Engineering Company Pvt. Ltd. (NEEK), which has gained international recognition in the production and supply of high-quality transformers, is set to produce 'Package Substations' for the first time in Nepal. They have obtained a license from Schneider Electric Company to manufacture these products in Nepal.

On the last week Friday, taking advantage of the opportunity to obtain a license for 'Package Substation' production, NEEK conducted a program to provide information about it. During the same occasion, Kulman Ghising, the Managing Director (MD) of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), expressed pleasure at NEEK's introduction of new technology through the production of high-quality transformers in Nepal and their export abroad.

In the field of electricity distribution, this new type of technology introduced by NEEK within the country is believed to lead to improvements and advancements in the future by the NEA. Kush Kumar Joshi, Managing Director of NEEK highlighted the company's new beginning in electrification and technology imports and usage during the event.

According to him, such substations will be more useful in industrial sectors, irrigation, water supply, corporate offices, telecommunications, and similar areas. He also mentioned that this will not only reduce electrical accidents but also minimize technical losses.

NEEK emphasized the importance of maintaining standards, quality, and specifications while producing substations under the license obtained from Schneider. If the production deviates from or falls below its standards, the Indian company could revoke the license. Therefore, NEEK faces the challenge of further enhancing its expertise in the production of such substations.

In case of breakdowns of such substations, skilled engineers would be required, and general technicians could also perform maintenance. It is also emphasized that such substations will be more secure from external unnecessary electrical waves and natural disasters. According to NEEK, these substations play a crucial role in operating power systems efficiently and maintaining electricity flow. Initially, they plan to produce substations up to 11 kV.

A significant amount of transformers produced by the only transformer manufacturer, NEEK, are exported to Bhutan and Bangladesh along with Nepal.

What is a package substation?

Based on the example of 'assembled' and 'branded' computers, this can be understood. In an assembled computer, parts from various companies are put together to make a single unit, whereas in a branded computer, there is one unit with a single brand. Similarly, a package substation also involves combining different types of equipment into a single unit.

In the future, the NEA plans to expand through small package substations and industries. The 'Package Substations' like this will upgrade and expand old technology in various industries.

"In the field of electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, the NEA has not been able to import new technology for decades. This initiative promotes new technology, development, and expansion, boosting the private sector.

Founded in France in 1934, Schneider Electric has gained worldwide popularity through innovation and expansion. Currently, it offers services globally.
